I work in Primary and have just been made subject leader for Art. Added duties aside, I'm super excited about it and want to zoop up my classroom over the summer holidays! We've recently had a new head who seems to really embrace creativity which has opened a lot of new opportunities for me.
I'm thinking about making a "Garden of Creativity" board to pin up children's drawings and designs in the corridor and running some friendly competitions, as well as displaying a number of different famous artists and some of their quotes as a starting point.
Looking for some inspiration and what's worked well for others!!!
Congrats on your new role! Our Art lead is very good, here are some ideas for you
- Artist spotlights - Feature different artists each month in the class
- Organise periodic art exhibitions
- Set up various art stations dedicated to a specific medium or technique
- Encourage students to keep personal art journals, if they are really into it!
Love the garden of creativity idea too
Start an art book club or plan some collaborative art projects that involve entire classes working together, like a large mural, group sculture, creative storytelling project, etc...
Amazing! I am also art subject leader at my school and it is ao important to have that passion plus a headteacher that supports your vision! I would reccommend reading “teaching art to young children” by Rob Barnes as i found that helpful when starting as a subject leader.
Display is a celebration of childrens work and tour garden idea is perfect! Have artist quotes and enough display space allocated around the school! TATE are always running art competitions and you should look into “access arts week” run by sky arts!
